Serbia and Switzerland meet in a World Cup 2018 Group E contest this evening at the Kaliningrad Stadium in Russia.
These sides both achieved positive results in their opening games on Sunday, with Serbia overcoming Costa Rica 1-0 thanks to captain Aleksandar Kolarov’s expertly taken free-kick.
Switzerland then held pre-tournament favourites Brazil to a 1-1 draw in Rostov-on-Don, with Steven Zuber’s header giving the Swiss their just reward for a dogged display.
This is the first-ever meeting between the nations and promises to be an evenly contested game, with both sides entering the competition with realistic hopes of at least finishing second behind Brazil in the table.
Switzerland qualified behind France and ahead of Ecuador and Honduras in their group four years ago in Brazil, before narrowly losing 1-0 to Argentina in the last 16, with Angel Di Maria’s dramatic 118th-minute winner preventing an upset.
The Serbians failed to reach the finals four years ago, and endured a disappointing campaign in the 2010 finals in South Africa, when they finished bottom of a group containing Germany, Ghana and Australia.
