Brazil take on Costa Rica in World Cup 2018 this afternoon, as both teams play their second match in Group E, which comes from Saint Petersburg Stadium, Russia.
Brazil – many people’s tip for glory this year – surprisingly drew their opening fixture against Switzerland on Sunday, with Philippe Coutinho’s sumptuous first-half strike cancelled out by midfielder Steven Zuber’s header from a corner early in the second half.
Costa Rica lost their opener 1-0 to Serbia, and will be well aware that they now need something from this game to stand any chance of qualifying.
The Costa Ricans have not defeated their illustrious opponents since the 1960 Panamerican Championship, and the last meeting between the sides in a World Cup saw Brazil prevail 5-2 in the group stage en route to lifting the trophy in 2002.
However, the Costa Ricans will not be intimidated by the South Americans after their achievement in reaching the quarter-finals four years ago, and produced a spirited display in losing 1-0 when the sides last met in a friendly three years ago in New Jersey.
