Keir Simmons – Q&A

Name?
Keir Simmons

Age?
34

Where are you from?
South East London via Bristol

How did you get started in broadcasting?
At Independent Radio News.

When was that?
In 1996 I think.

Why News broadcasting?
It was either this or politics. My early motivation was that journalism can make a real difference. Was I right? Not sure, but I do love the work.

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
I’m employed full time by ITV News as a reporter. Before that London Tonight, Sky News, Channel 5 News … I was a freelance reporter for many years.

What is your Best on-air moment?
No idea. To be honest, I’m mostly trying to improve rather than congratulate myself. Also, in journalism the best moment can often be pretty tough. That’s not to say it’s not good doing the work – we reporters get to see incredible people, moments in history, places. It’s a privilege.

What is your Worst on-air moment?
My first ever live broadcast. Terrifying.

What would you like to do before your career ends?
Break a major exclusive story. Actually I’d like to do this quite a few times if possible.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spend time with my girlfriend and good friends. To be honest I spend a lot of time working on background research and watching the news output from ITV and our competitors.

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
Spend as much time thinking about what you want to do, as you do about where you want to be. What I mean is, a journalist is just a person – don’t wait to be given a job before you start looking for stories / filming stories. Start now. Broadcasting organisations want people with great ideas – not people who just want a job. These days it’s possible to make a version of television news with a small camera and a lap top – so what’s stopping you?

A big thanks to Keir for taking part.
