Born in Bahrain, father Scots, mother English, grew up mostly in Aberdeenshire.

How did you get started in broadcasting?
World Service production trainee

Why News broadcasting?
Best job in the world when you’re telling stories that matter.

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
I was Beijing correspondent in the 90s. And I present a World Service programme called The Interview. Occasional documentaries and analysis on China.

What is your Best on-air moment?
Live OB from a galloping racehorse during Cheltenham Gold Cup week.

What is your Worst on-air moment?
Presenting News 24 the week of 9/11 when we broadcast the last messages from those who were about to die on Flight 93 and interviewed relatives of people missing in the Twin Towers.

What would you like to do before your career ends?
Write a screenplay. Interview Tony Blair. Talk sense.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Play with my kids. Run. Climb hills. Be with friends who make me laugh.

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
Be a reporter. Get far away from HQ so you can get your own perspective on the stories. Have a sense of history. Remember that news is about real people.
