I’m A Celebrity 2013 Contestant: Alfonso Ribeiro

Alfonso Ribeiro is a contestant on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity..Get Me Out Of Here 2013!

Age: 42
Date of Birth: 21 September 1971
Phobias: Snakes, lizards, creepy crawlies, claustrophobia
Missing any special occasions: I am a big sports fan and I am missing some events but nothing comes close to the fact I have a newborn son
Relationship status: Married

American Sitcom Star Alfonso Ribeiro admits his wife isn’t very happy he is taking part as he deserts her and his newborn son to live in the celebrity jungle.

The 42-year-old – who is famous for his role as Carlton Banks on the NBC sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, alongside Will Smith – became a dad to a baby boy, named after him, a couple of weeks ago on the 27th October.

And as he prepares to get to know his British camp mates, the American star, who also has an eleven-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, is leaving his wife Angela to cope with the sleepless nights on her own.

“She is not too happy, but sometimes in this business you have to do the things you do and then you have a whole life to make it up.

“My wife is very worried for me too. She doesn’t know how I am going to survive. She makes food for me all the time. She knows how much I hate bugs, lizards and snakes so she is wondering how the hell it will ever work. But at the end of the day, I have never failed anything in my life. I will figure out if this is the first.”

Letting slip he has only watched a couple of shows and barely knows how the programme works, let alone what kind of challenges the celebrities face to win food, Alfonso reckons ignorance is bliss.

“I accepted the offer because it was a chance to conquer some fears of mine,” he explains. “I am scared of them because you can’t talk or reason to them.

“I have not actually seen much of I’m A Celebrity, which is the reason why I am doing it. If I had seen more of it, I would probably say ‘hell no’.

“This is 100 per cent brand new for me. Nothing about this is what I am used to.”

Determined to embrace life in the camp, he isn’t sure what kind of role he will adopt on the grounds he ‘doesn’t know the show well enough’, but he jokes that the sleepless nights he has already endured with his newborn son will put him in good stead.

“I am totally ok with stressful situations,” he explains. “Obviously I am well prepared for no sleep! With a newborn, there is not a lot of sleep going on. I will be well prepared for that.

“If I don’t eat, I do get a bit grouchy and I can’t stand bullies. I can’t stand people who have high egos and believe in themselves more than what the normal range should be.

“Am I argumentative? I share my opinions. I am strong to let people hear them. I am certainly not the quiet guy in the corner. I will debate information.

“It’s all going to be totally brand new and I am excited to meet everyone. I probably will not know anyone in the jungle. I won’t know who they are. I am going in with a true open mind as to who they are as I will have no clue.”

Asked what he thinks of the British, he replies: “I have visited Britain a lot. They have been naturally wonderful when I have been over here. There are all kinds of people everywhere in the world – great people, bad people, A holes and sweethearts.”

Bursting into laughter, he insists that if he does go on an emotional journey in the jungle, it will be because he has experienced something dramatic.

“You tend to learn things about yourself when you have been through something dramatic,” he explains. “If I do, I hope I come out better for it.”

Is there anything he will point blank refuse to do?

“I am a little bit claustrophobic and so anything where you can’t get out will be a problem,” he declares.

“I did have nightmares (about this) before we got close to our son being born. But since then, he has been my entire focus. There is no point worrying about it as you can’t change it.”

Fans of the hit TV Show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air will have to wait until Alfonso leaves the jungle if they want to see the famous Carlton dance. “

“There will be no dance until I am voted out. At the point of the show when you get released, my wife and my son are coming down. It will be nice to know that when once I leave the jungle I will have the miracle of being able to see them again.

“I am going to miss them a tonne. I love being a dad. My little guy is just a ball of strength and energy and I can already tell he is going to be something.”
