Nigeria take on Argentina this evening as the third and final Group D fixtures of World Cup 2018 take place.
The match, staged at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Russia, will be shown live on BBC One.
Nigeria are currently in second place in the group, behind the already-qualified Croatia, and know that a win here will send them through and eliminate both tonight’s opponents and Iceland.
A draw may also be enough for the Super Eagles, provided Iceland don’t defeat Croatia by more than two goals. Nothing less than a win will be enough for Argentina, whose last outing was a disastrous 3-0 loss to the Croatians.
These nations are not strangers when it comes to facing each other at the World Cup, having been drawn in the same group as each other on four previous occasions, which is even more remarkable when one considers Nigeria have only made five appearances at the finals prior to this tournament.
The first time was at USA 94, when the Super Eagles managed to top the group despite losing 2-1 to the South Americans, while the second encounter in 2002 saw Argentina triumph again, this time 1-0 in Japan, but both teams were eliminated after finishing behind Sweden and England.
The other meetings took place at the two most recent tournaments, with Argentina also emerging triumphant 1-0 in South Africa in 2010, when they progressed to the knockout phase and Nigeria finished bottom of the group, before they claimed yet another win in Brazil four years ago, this time by a score of 3-2 following a pulsating affair.
The match will also be streamed live via the BBC iPlayer.
