Premier League TV rights 2013 – 2016: Sky Sports win 5 packages, while BT win 2 – ESPN lose all rights

The Premier League has concluded the sales process for the seven packages of live UK television rights for seasons 2013/14 to 2015/16.

The seven packages – five of 26 matches and two of 12 matches – totalling 154 matches were awarded to Sky and BT.

This means ESPN, who currently show 23 matches per season, will show NO Premier League football after the 2012/13 season.

Sky won packages B, C, D, E and F – 116 matches and BT secured packages A and G totalling 38 matches.

The overall value delivered for the seven packages sales process is £3.018 billion.

“The Barclays Premier League continues to provide excellent football and enthralling drama as we saw last season,” said Richard Scudamore, the Premier League’s Chief Executive.

“The value this drives for our rightsholders is evident and we are extremely pleased that this has been realised for our UK live rights.”

“The continuing support of BSkyB for Premier League football is significant beyond the revenues delivered; the longevity and quality of their commitment has done much for the English game as a whole. We are very happy to see this relationship maintained for another three seasons.

“We welcome BT as a new Premier League broadcast partner. They are a substantial British company that is at the leading edge of technology and infra-structure development. They are clearly investing in quality content to use on their platforms and when combined with the reach and pull of Premier League football they will deliver new ways in which fans will be able to follow the competition.

Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: “The Premier League has never been more popular with our customers so it’s excellent news that Sky Sports viewers will continue to enjoy the biggest and best games, including Super Sunday and Monday Night Football.

“Sky Sports viewers have never had so much choice of high quality action. Alongside the Premier League, we have long term agreements in place to show the best in live sport, including UEFA Champions League football, European, Ryder Cup and US tour golf, Test and one-day cricket and Formula One. At the same time, we’ll continue to innovate in providing the best coverage possible.”

Ian Livingston, BT Chief Executive, said: “We are pleased to have won these rights and to have secured around half of the best games on offer each season. We look forward to offering football fans real value and great quality using the latest technology.

“BT is already investing £2.5bn in fibre broadband. Securing Premier League rights fits naturally with this, as consumers increasingly want to buy their broadband and entertainment services from a single provider.”

Sky have been awarded the following:

B: 26 matches – mainly Saturday at 5.30pm
C: 26 matches – Sunday at 1.30pm (Super Sunday)
D: 26 matches – Sunday at 4pm (Super Sunday)
E: 26 matches – mainly Monday evenings (Monday Night Football)
F: 12 matches – Saturday at 5.30pm
Total – 116 matches each season.

BT won the following:

A: 26 matches – mainly Saturday at 12.45pm
G: 12 matches – 10 Bank holidays and Midweek & 2 Saturday 12:45 matches
Total – 38 matches each season.
