Black Mirror: ’15 Million Merits’

The second episode of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror will air this Sunday at 9:30pm on Channel 4.

The episode, 15 Million Merits, is set in a sarcastic version of a future reality – a satire on entertainment shows and our insatiable thirst for distraction.

In this world, everyone is confined to a life of strange physical drudgery. The only way to escape this life is to enter the ‘Hot Shot’ talent show and pray you can impress the judges.

The episode is written by Charlie Brooker and his wife and former Xtra Factor presenter, Konnie Huq.

Charlie said: “The idea came about when my wife was watching me dumbly patting at an iPad while simultaneously checking Twitter on a phone, and remarked that I’d only be truly happy if every wall in the house functioned as some form of touchscreen. This led to a conversation about inflight entertainment: about how the addition of a small screen spooling films into your face makes the discomfort of a long-haul flight more bearable.”

The cast includes Daniel Kayluuya, Jessica Brown Findlay, Rupert Everett, Julia Davis and Ashley Thomas.

The first episode of Black Mirror, The National Anthem, was a resounding success, attracting over 1.9 million viewers for Channel 4.
