Five News launches new look

Five News today, Monday January 3rd 2005, launched its brand new on-air look as Sky News took over production of the channel’s bulletins.

Kirsty Young, the face of Five, was the first presenter on the new set, bringing viewers up-to-date with the latest developments on the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami as well as the rest of the days news.

The unique set, complete with a mezzanine floor, has been designed by PDG, part of the Jack Morton Group based in New York, who have previously worked on the groundbreaking CNBC studio and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Five’s Senior Programme Controller, Chris Shaw, said: “The design is a deliberate move away from the current obsession with virtual reality sets. We’ve tried to create a proper physical home for our news which is both modern and personal.”

Viewers got a peek of the new look when Five decided to unexpectedly broadcast two Five News Updates over the weekend to bring viewers up-to-date with the latest from Asia. Kirsty Young and Kate Sanderson presented the updates at 9pm on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
